First LLPD installation for E-Distribuzione near Oderzo, Veneto, Italy
04.07.2022In 2019, the University of Napoli contacted Streamer Electric AG in order the find a lightning protection solution for medium voltage lines. Prof. Amedeo Andreotti was looking for medium voltage line protection devices for E-Distribuzione, the Distribution utility of Italy, part of the ENEL group owner of the electrical network in Italy but also many other electrical networks around the world. E- Distribuzione is actively looking to improve the lightning outage rate on their overhead line network and particularly in the northern part of Italy.
Prof Andreotti is working in collaboration with ENEL Global I&N. He had read about Streamer devices (Line Lightning Protection Devices or LLPD) in in published scientific papers in which very good improvements in regards to line lightning outage rate after installation of LLPDs.
After several iterations of technical discussions and meetings, a suitable medium voltage line E- Distribuzione was selected for a trial project close Oderzo, Veneto.
The complete technical folder for this installation and the trial follow-up was built in cooperation with the Product Management of Streamer Electric, the University of Napoli, and E-Distribuzione. The COVID19 of course delayed greatly the completion of this project but finally, in September 2021, enough products were delivered in Italy to be able to equip 35 lattice towers and 100 poles of the line branches with the target to improve by more than 70% the lightning outage rate of this line.

The effect of these devices will be followed and studied by E-Distribuzione and ENEL Global I&N in cooperation with the University of Napoli. The number of outages before and after the installation of LLPD will be compared by checking several sources of record including some new RGDM devices, fault detector implemented by ENEL, properly modified to record all lightning events (direct or indirect) and the lightning impact location provided by the laboratory CESI.
Most of the LLPDs were installed in June 2022 in a beautiful background with towers running through the vineyards. We are looking forward to the first lightning season to come (during the summer) to see the positive effect of these devices.
We would like to thank all the people who participated in the creation of the technical proposal at Streamer Electric, including the Product Management and the R&D department, the University of Napoli, and for the installation of LLPDs E-distribuzione team in Rome (Mr. D’Orazio, Mr. Di Felice, Mr. Spitilli) and in Veneto.

Vietnam Ha Giang Power Company will test Streamer innovative devices of lightning protection.

Ha Giang is a mountainous province with a complex topography and experiences extremely high lightning density during the thunderstorm season. 110 kV lines in the province mostly pass through mountainous terrain, many rivers, and streams, so breaks of the line wires due to lightning, are not uncommon. Most of the problem areas are concentrated in areas such as the Nam Ngan hydroelectric power plant and the city of Viet Kuang. Installation of innovative lightning protection devices to provide the region with uninterrupted power supply was necessary.
